Streaming Media Services

Network Services supports Real Networks Helix server for real-time streaming of media files. This service is available to faculty, staff and students. Library and Academic Technology Services (LATS), the first level of support for this service, should be contacted for additional information.

Functionality and Benefits

  • Content Security: Streaming is inherently more secure than Progressive Download (non-streaming video) since streaming allows only a small amount of the video in memory at any given time.
  • Bandwidth Savings: Streaming is throttled so that less bandwidth is used for videos that are abandoned. (e.g., when viewer does not watch the whole video.)
  • Viewer Experience: Seek experience, jumping ahead or backwards on longer video (anything more than 5-7 minutes), is greatly enhanced
