Network Services supports the servers that provide assistive technology, such as WebAdapt2Me, from IBM that removes barriers to reading for people with print disabilities. Anyone interesting in learning more about this tool is welcome to go to http://webadapt.csulb.edu/ or contact Jan Reyes at jreyes@csulb.edu.
Network Services supports the servers, such as LIFT and HiSoftware, that assist in the efforts to grade websites and their compliance with established accessibility criteria. Publications, the first level of support for these services, can be contacted by College webmasters that are interested in these tools using the address of webmaster@csulb.edu.
The campus DHCP Service is how most devices such as PCs and Macs obtain an IP address to be able to communicate on the network. As a “Network Enabling Service”, this service is critical to the function of the network. Changes are not usually necessary for any reason.
Network Services does not offer DHCP Reservations. Static IP addresses are assigned and managed by the local Information Technology Coordinators.
Domain Name Services (DNS) for the .csulb.edu and 134.139.x.x name spaces are the responsibility of Network Services. Requests for additions, changes, or removals must come through the appropriate Information Technology Coordinators before Network Services will take action.
Information Technology Coordinators should email net-engr@csulb.edu. Some changes may require the approval of Division, Department, or College Administrators and the Director of Network Services before action can be taken.
The CSU Long Beach Data Network is composed of primarily Cisco routers and switches offering 100 Megabit (FastEthernet) links to desktops, and interconnected with Gigabit fiber links. The core of the network processes some 100 to 200 million network “conversations” between different computers on the network and the Internet daily.
A high degree of redundancy is built in to the network, so that a single device outage only affects as small an area as possible.
New data network connections can be requested through a Telecommunications Work Order. Consultation with your local Information Technology Coordinator is advised because the final step in connecting new devices is done only with their involvement.
Network Services also provides network patch cables free of charge to Information Technology Coordinators. The orange color is our distinctive brand. Cables are available in lengths of 7, 15, 25, and 40 feet most of the time.
Network Services works with many groups on campus to provide security protection for our campus computing resources. From maintaining appropriate patch levels on servers, monitoring logs, and protecting servers on the network with Intrusion Prevention Systems and network behavior analysis, Network Services keeps a close watch.
Network Services maintains a variety of security tools to detect, analyze, mitigate, and in many cases prevent security incidents before they occur.
Our goal is to provide continue to enhance network security and data handling on all levels to protect our computing resources including network servers, desktop computers, network infrastructure, and sensitive data.
Network Services supports an Oracle server that is available for College webmasters to use in support of various projects. Support is limited to schema creation, backup and system maintenance. No development support is available. Those webmasters that wish to request the creation of a schema should contact net-help@csulb.edu. Some changes may require the approval of Division, Department, or College Administrators and the Director of Network Services before action can be taken
Network Services supports Real Networks Helix server for real-time streaming of media files. This service is available to faculty, staff and students. Library and Academic Technology Services (LATS), the first level of support for this service, should be contacted for additional information.
Network Services supports the central Identity Management system TIM. TIM is used to create a password linked with the CSULB CampusID number. Once this TIM password is created, access can be granted by individual systems such as MyCSULB, BeachBoard, BeachNet, Sign-up computer labs and Uniprint.
Network Services supports the web analytics and web statistics tool, WebTrends. This tool is administered through the Web Development Center and is available for use by College webmasters. If you are interested in WebTrends at CSULB, please contact the WDC at wdc@csulb.edu.
Network Services supports the Campus web server which houses many of the Campus websites, including http://www.csulb.edu and http://daf.csulb.edu. This web server is built with support for PHP and is available to all Faculty, Staff and students that have a CSULB e-mail account (@csulb.edu).
Network Services maintains the Wireless Networks beachnet and campus-domain. For more details:
In the summer of 2006, Network Services installed close to 300 Wireless Access Points (WAPs) across campus inside nearly every building. The goal was to provide Wireless connectivity in as close to 95% of the interior spaces as possible. We continue to seek additional funding to expand this network and enhance our coverage.
The Wireless network supports most devices using the IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g specifications.
