Recycling

Cardboard

Cardboard boxes should be flattened and left next to a blue recycling container in your office, where they will be picked up by the custodians for recycling.

If you have a large number of boxes, please flatten and take to a cardboard collection station nearest your building, normally found in the same area with trash dumpsters. Contact Facilities Management to locate a campus cardboard collection point nearest your building.

Where Does It Go?

All cardboard boxes collected in this program are hauled to a processing facility less than 15 miles from campus. The cardboard is then baled and sent to mills in the US, Mexico, and China where it is pulped and made into new paper for a variety of uses. One of the major mills where most of our cardboard goes is located near downtown Los Angeles. This mill manufactures liner board used to make new cardboard boxes.

Did You Know?

In 2003, more than 50% of all paper and paperboard consumed in the US was recovered for recycling, compared to only 33 percent in 1990. Not bad, but we can do better!
