Recycling

Cooking Grease

Food service operations throughout campus are conducted by the 49er Shops and Student Union. As with most food preparation and serving activities, cooking grease is generated and must be properly handled prior to collection for recycling (rendering). Grease should not be poured down the drain into the sewer system.

Where Does It Go?

Cooking grease is picked up from location points around campus on a regularly scheduled basis by a local rendering company. The grease is taken to a facility near downtown Los Angeles where it is converted into animal feed, bone meal, and tallow used to make soap and candles.
