The Deukmejian Way and Parking Lot 9 Construction Projects are Now Under Way

As you have probably seen, construction fences and barricades have been erected around Deukmejian Way and Parking Lot 9. Work has already commenced on both projects and their scheduled completion date is late August 2008. During construction, all of the buildings located adjacent to Deukmejian Way and Parking Lot 9 will remain open and operational and pedestrian access will be provided at all times. Additionally, Parking Lots 9 and 10 will be closed to vehicular traffic. Disabled person access will remain and the path of travel will be clearly marked. The work areas will be surrounded by temporary fencing for the duration of each project and will not be accessible except for contractor and authorized University staff.

As a result of each project’s activities, the following pedestrian and vehicular traffic impacts are anticipated:

  • Cart traffic exiting from the Facilities Management Corporate Yard can currently access Deukmejian Way. However, as the project progresses this will not be the case. At that point, cart traffic will proceed from the Corporate Yard's east gates and continue through Parking Lot 11 to access their destination.
  • Only pedestrian access from Parking Lot 12 to the Physical Education building will be available.
  • Pedestrian access will remain available from Parking Lot 11—it will be along the east side of Deukmejian Way.

Please follow all posted signs in and around these construction areas…they are there for your safety! If you have any questions during the course of this project, please contact Enrique Robles at extension 58186. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we continue to improve our campus roadways and parking facilities!

New Contact for Disposing Your Electronic Waste

This summer, operational management of the university's electronic waste (e-waste) was transferred to the Property Department. The transition has been a cooperative effort amongst the Property, Purchasing and SRM departments and it has gone through very smoothly.

Please note that all requests for pick of your electronic waste are to be made through Miguel Guzman in the Property Department. Miguel's extension is 58119. As always, it is each department's responsibility to ensure that all their computer hard drives are "cleaned" prior to requesting a pick up. Remember, protecting sensitive information is everyone's responsibility!

Fire Alarm Drills Save Lives

Every semester, the university conducts a campus-wide fire alarm drill. It is intended to keep all of us familiar with the correct "process" for evacuating your building in the event of a fire or other emergency. Our building marshals, located in most buildings on campus, have received specialized training in our building evacuation procedures and play an integral role in providing this essential service to the campus community. Please take the time to review the evacuation plans posted in each building. If you cannot find the posted plan, contact University Police at extension 54101 and let them know your building needs a posted evacuation plan. It is important for all of us to remain vigilant in keeping up to date on what to do in the event of a disaster—it can save your life and maybe the life of someone else!

One of our SRM staff is Returning to School

Brian Johnson, our Hazardous Materials Specialist, has recently resigned from the campus to return to school full time. Brian displayed a strong work ethic and attention to detail that will be missed. We all wish him well in his future endeavors. Our office has already begun the recruiting process to fill Brian's position and we will continue to provide the campus with uninterrupted service related to our hazardous materials/waste management. Please contact George Alfaro at extension 52378 for any assistance.
