The CSULB Media Sanitation Standard was developed in response to the requirements of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FACTA) regarding the disposal of media containing personal information. These requirements mandate the University to "take reasonable measures to protect against unauthorized access to or use of personal information in connection with its disposal" defined as (1) the discarding or abandonment of information, or (2) the sale, donation, or transfer of any medium, including computer equipment, upon which personal information is stored.
Some media on which personal information may be stored is obvious – paper, hard drives, zip disks, floppies, CDs, flash drives or USB/Memory Sticks. Other media are not that obvious and may surprise you – cell phones, copy machines, and fax machines. However, regardless of medium, personal information stored on that medium must be sanitized prior to disposal.
To learn more about the sanitization processes required for various media, please consult the CSULB Media Sanitation Standard.
Governor Schwartzenegger approved Assembly Bill (AB) 1168 which requires the Office of Privacy Protection in the Department of Consumer Affairs to establish the "College and University Task Force" (task force) to conduct a review of the use by all California colleges and universities of social security numbers in order to recommend practices to minimize the collection, use, storage, and retention of social security numbers in relations to academic and operational needs and applicable legal requirements. The task force shall begin meeting no later than May 1, 2008 and shall submit a final report of its findings on or before July 1, 2010.
