Funeral / Bereavement Leave

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Upon request to the President, an employee shall be granted leave with pay for each death of a significantly close relative/person or immediate family member. Funeral leave may be supplemented in accordance with bereavement leave provisions of the collective bargaining agreements.

GUIDELINE STATEMENT

The chart below is a reference that can be used to determine the amount of paid funeral/bereavement leave an employee is entitled to under this program.

Unit 1 (Physicians) 5 Days Death must be of a significantly close relative, as defined in the Unit 1 contract. “Significantly close relative” for Unit 1 shall only mean the spouse (or domestic partner) and the employee’s or his/her spouse’s (or domestic partner’s) mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, or relative living in the immediate household of the employee.
Units 2, 5, 7, 9 (CSUEU) 5 Days Death may be for “immediate family” “Immediate family” for Units 2,5,7 & 9 shall mean employee’s spouse or domestic partner, employee, spouse or domestic partner’s: parent, step-parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, sibling, child or grandchild (including foster, adopted and step), aunt, uncle, the employee’s son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and a person living in the immediate household of the employee, except domestic employees, roomers, boarders, and/or roommates.
Unit 3
(Faculty)
5 Days Death must be in “immediate family.” "Immediate family" for Unit 3 shall mean the employee's spouse or domestic partner, parent, grandparent, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, stepchild or stepparent of the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and close relative or persons residing in the immediate household of the employee (except domestic employees or roomers). Also included in this definition shall be any minor children or incapacitated individuals for whom the employee has primary responsibility or legal guardianship or conservatorship.
Unit 4
(Academic Support)
5 days Death must be of a “significantly close person.” “Significantly close person” for Unit 4 shall mean the employee’s spouse or domestic partner; the employee, spouse, or domestic partner’s: parent, step-parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, sibling, child or grandchild (including foster, adopted, and step), aunt uncle; the employee’s son-in-law, daughter-in-law; a person living in the immediate household of the employee, except domestic employees, roomers, boarders, and/or roommates.
Unit 6
(Skilled Trades)
5 Days Death must be of a “significantly close relative” or “immediate family member” “Significant close relative or immediate family” for Unit 6 shall mean the employee’s spouse or domestic partner; the employee, spouse or domestic partner’s: parent, step-parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, sibling, child or grandchild (including foster, adopted and step), aunt, uncle; the employee’s son-in-law, daughter-in-law; a person living in the immediate household of the employee, except domestic employees, roomers, boarders, and/or roommates.
Unit 8
(Public Safety)
5 days Death must be of an “immediate family member” “Immediate family” for Unit 8 shall mean the employee’s spouse or domestic partner; the employee’s, spouse or domestic partner’s: sibling, grandparents, great-grandparent, child (including foster, adopted and step-child), grandchild, aunt, uncle, step-parent; the employee’s son-in-law, daughter-in-law; and a relative of the employee, spouse or domestic partner who is living in the immediate household of the employee.
Unit 11
(Academic Student Employees)
2 days
OR
3 Days (upon request, if required to travel over five hundred (500) miles from home).
Death must be in “immediate family.” "Immediate family" for Unit 11 shall mean employee's spouse or registered domestic partner, the employee's spouse or domestic partner’s father, mother, sister, brother, grandparent, great grandparent, child (including foster, adopted, and step child), grandchild; the employee’s son-in-law, daughter-in-law; a person who is living in the immediate household of the employee, except domestic employees, roomers, boarders and/or roommates.
Management
Personnel Plan (MPP) (M80)
5 Days Death may be for “significantly close relative” or “immediate family member.” “Immediate family” or “significantly close person” for Confidential and Management Personnel Plan employees shall mean employee’s spouse or domestic partner; the employee, spouse, or domestic partner’s: parent, step-parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, sibling, child or grandchild (including foster, adopted, and step), aunt uncle; the employee’s son-in-law, daughter-in-law; a person living in the immediate household of the employee, except domestic employees, roomers, boarders, and/or roommates.
Confidential
(C99)
5 Days Death may be for “significantly close relative” or “immediate family member.” Same as (MPP).
Excluded
(E99)
None Not available to employees within this employee category.
